Experiment Allocation and Targeting
Set how many eligible users enter a Statsig experiment and which users qualify, using allocation percentages and inline or feature gate targeting.
Allocation sets how many users enter the experiment. Targeting sets which users qualify for it. Configure both on the experiment's Setup tab. You can change allocation after the experiment starts, but changing targeting mid-run has consequences for the users already exposed.
Allocation
Allocation is the percentage of eligible users that Statsig assigns to your experiment, from 0% to 100% of your total users. Start with a smaller percentage, verify that the experiment is stable, then increase the allocation.
You can change the allocation at any time after the experiment starts.
Decreasing allocation biases group allocation and pollutes your metric results, so don't decrease allocation without resetting the experiment.
Allocation applies within the experiment's layer. An experiment can only take allocation the layer still has free.
Targeting
Targeting limits the experiment to the users who meet the conditions you define. You can set new targeting criteria or reference an existing feature gate.
- For basic targeting, leave the default inline targeting. Make sure Criteria: Everyone is selected.
- For more advanced targeting (for example, progressive rollouts), or to keep targeting criteria when you launch the experiment, review how feature gates are targeted.
By default, Statsig applies no targeting criteria, and the experiment includes all allocated users within the defined layer or exposed user base.
Your targeting choice changes what happens when you ship. For how a targeting gate affects the parameter values users receive after a decision, go to Make a Decision.
