# Schedule an Experiment Stop

> For AI agents: a documentation index is available at [/llms.txt](/llms.txt). Append `.md` to any page URL for markdown, or send `Accept: text/markdown`.

A scheduled stop runs Stop New Assignments or Conclude Experiment & Defer Decision on an experiment at a future date and time that you pick. Scheduling changes only when the action runs, not what the action does. Use it when you already know when an experiment should stop, for example at the end of a planned test window, so you don't have to end it by hand.

To stop an experiment right away, run [Stop Assignments](https://docs.statsig.com/experiments/ending/stop-assignments) or [Conclude Experiment and Defer Decision](https://docs.statsig.com/experiments/ending/conclude-experiment-defer-decision) from the **Make Decision** dropdown instead.

## How a scheduled stop works

An experiment has at most one pending stop: one date and time, and one action. The two actions behave the same way they do when you run them from the **Make Decision** dropdown:

- **Stop New Assignments**: Statsig stops enrolling new users, and analysis continues. Users already assigned keep their group only when you use [Persistent Assignment](https://docs.statsig.com/server/concepts/persistent_assignment). Otherwise, they receive the default experience. For details, go to [Stop Assignments](https://docs.statsig.com/experiments/ending/stop-assignments).
- **Conclude Experiment & Defer Decision**: Statsig stops delivery and analysis, and ships no group. For details, go to [Conclude Experiment and Defer Decision](https://docs.statsig.com/experiments/ending/conclude-experiment-defer-decision).

Statsig checks for due stops about every five minutes. Statsig doesn't run a stop before the experiment starts. After the experiment starts, a stop whose time has passed runs on the next check.

The date and time picker uses 15-minute steps in your browser's local time zone. You can pick any time from now through one year ahead. When you schedule a start and a stop together, the stop must be later than the start.

Each action appears only after you turn it on in project settings. Turn on Stop New Assignments in _Settings > Project Info_ and Conclude Experiment & Defer Decision in _Settings > Experimentation_.

> **Note:** Experiments and decisions you can't schedule
>
> Autotune, switchback experiments, and Warehouse Native analysis-only experiments don't support a scheduled stop. You also can't schedule shipping a group or abandoning an experiment.

## Schedule a stop when you start an experiment

Use the Start dialog when the experiment hasn't started and has no scheduled start.

1. Open the experiment and click **Start**.
2. Under _Start_, select **Immediately**, or select **At a scheduled time** and pick the start date and time.
3. Under _Stop_, select **At a scheduled time**. The default, **Manually**, runs the experiment until you stop it.
4. Pick the stop date and time, then select **Stop New Assignments** or **Conclude Experiment & Defer Decision**.
5. Click **Start & Schedule Stop** or **Schedule Start & Stop**. If your company requires reviews, click **Submit for Review**.

## Change a scheduled start and stop

When the experiment hasn't started and already has a scheduled start, the experiment header shows **Change Scheduled Start**.

- To edit the schedule, click **Change Scheduled Start**, then **Edit Scheduled Start**. The dialog shows the scheduled start and the scheduled stop together.
- To cancel, click **Change Scheduled Start**, then **Cancel Scheduled Start**. If the experiment also has a scheduled stop, choose what to cancel:

  - **Scheduled start and stop**: The experiment doesn't start, so Statsig cancels the stop too.
  - **Scheduled stop only**: The experiment still starts at the scheduled time and runs until you stop it.

## Schedule a stop on a running experiment

1. Open the experiment and click **Make Decision**.
2. Under _Stop_, select **Schedule Stop**.
3. Pick the stop date and time, then select **Stop New Assignments** or **Conclude Experiment & Defer Decision**.
4. Click **Schedule Stop**. If your company requires reviews, click **Submit for Review**.

## Change or cancel a pending stop

While a running experiment has a pending stop, the experiment header shows **Change Scheduled Stop** and hides **Make Decision**.

- To edit the stop time or action, click **Change Scheduled Stop**, then **Edit Scheduled Stop**.
- To cancel the stop, click **Change Scheduled Stop**, then **Cancel Scheduled Stop**.

**Make Decision** returns after you cancel the scheduled stop.

## Reviews for scheduled stops

If your company requires reviews, a reviewer approves the schedule, each edit, and each cancellation. When the stop time arrives, Statsig runs the approved action without asking for a second approval.

> **Note:** When Statsig clears a pending stop
>
> Restarting the experiment clears its pending stop. If you turn off the project setting for the scheduled action, Statsig clears the pending stop instead of running it.
