# Abandon an Experiment

Abandon an experiment when it has an issue or you need to stop it for any reason without shipping a group. Abandoning an experiment puts it into the unstarted state, and every user receives the default experience. Use Reset instead when one group has a bug you plan to fix and you want to restart the same experiment later.

When you abandon an experiment, the "salt" the experiment uses to randomize a user's group also changes. When you restart the experiment, Statsig randomly assigns users to a group that isn't necessarily the same group they were in before. This reassignment ensures that a bug or bad experience in the previous run doesn't negatively affect a group after you address the issue in the new run.
